New and emerging biobased processes to produce renewable chemicals and bioplastics will provide innovative, viable, and most importantly, sustainable alternatives from sustainable feedstocks. Companies are striving to design 100% bioplastics which are recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable, and at the same time decarbonizing. 

As more companies focus on reducing their dependence on crude oil and reducing the amount of waste in landfills and oceans, downstream users are seeking cost-effective, biobased alternatives for packaging, cosmetic ingredients, and other uses.  Governments and industry organizations are influencing the transition with standards or regulations either encouraging or mandating the use of environmentally friendly biobased products.  Consumers also are demanding greener and safer products.


2.  Sustainable Feedstocks, Biofuels, Food and Feed Products Driving Decarbonization

Renewable feedstocks for the production of sustainable aviation fuels, advanced and cellulosic biofuels, other alternative fuels as well as low carbon intensity food and feed products to serve transportation, food and feed sectors.  New climate smart technologies and regenerative farming practices displacing fossil derived transportation fuels and agricultural inputs that also have the advantage of sequestering atmospheric carbon into renewable biomass and agricultural, forestry, pasture and rangeland soils.  

​America’s farms and ranches were struggling just to make a profit even before the COVID-19 pandemic, but regenerative practices replacing conventional farming, ranching and forestry management practices support participation into emerging environmental benefits markets to provide new revenue opportunities and long-term profitability for thousands of hard-hit farms, ranches and forestry operations across the U.S.

Synthetic biology is a field of science that involves redesigning organisms for useful purposes by engineering them to have new abilities to produce renewable specialty chemicals which include flavors and fragrances, food ingredients, beauty and wellness, and alternative proteins which have broad market opportunities for high value chemicals from regenerative agriculture.


Synthetic biology researchers and companies around the world are harnessing the power of nature to solve problems in medicine, biobased manufacturing, and agriculture to build a resilient biobased economy.  The impact on cleaning and protecting our planet with emerging climate smart technologies supports the sector as it provides solutions to build greener supply chains.
