commercialization of industrial biotechnology products. Their contributions can be
measured in making our planet an environmentally cleaner and safer place to live
in.  The award is meant for an individual in an organization or is awarded to the
organization. The award is sponsored by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., part of Sage
Publishing of of the
Journal Industrial Biotechnology.

This year's award is presented to Citroniq in recognition for advancing science
and introducing new industrial biotechnology pathways to biopolymers.

Citroniq has demonstrated extraordinary vision by targeting polypropylene, a foundational material to industries including packaging, consumer products, automotive components, medical devices, textiles, and industrial applications.


Traditional polypropylene production is heavily reliant on fossil-based feedstocks and is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. Citroniq’s bold vision reimagines this status quo by introducing a renewable-carbon pathway that replaces petroleum inputs with bioethanol derived from sustainable sources.

This approach is transformational and Citroniq envisions a future in which high-performance plastics can be produced sustainably, without sacrificing quality or scalability, fundamentally reshaping how materials are manufactured worldwide. 


Citroniq has demonstrated strong industry leadership by advancing its renewable polypropylene technology to commercial-scale deployment. The company has developed a scalable platform that integrates seamlessly into existing manufacturing infrastructure while securing meaningful market validation.


Notably, Citroniq secured a 15-year binding offtake agreement with Vinmar’s Premier Product Marketing for its biobased polypropylene, covering approximately 50% of the planned output from its Nebraska facility. This significant commercial commitment underscores both market confidence and accelerates global demand for sustainable, bio-based materials. Through strategic partnerships, infrastructure investment, and proven commercial traction, Citroniq is setting a new standard for how innovative technologies can successfully scale within the global plastics industry.

Citroniq is at the forefront of industrial biotechnology, pioneering the integration of bio-based inputs into large-scale chemical manufacturing. Its technology represents a major advancement in reducing the carbon intensity of polypropylene production while maintaining operational efficiency.


In addition to carbon reduction, Citroniq is leading in environmental stewardship, designing facilities with a net-positive water balance. This means their operations will produce water rather than consume it, ensuring no adverse impact on local aquifers or surface water resources—a critical innovation in sustainable industrial design.
